The Gateway to Web3

Manage your crypto, NFTs, and DeFi assets securely from your browser with the safest self-custody extension.

SELF-CUSTODY

True Ownership

The Coinbase Wallet Extension is not the same as the centralized exchange. It is a self-custody wallet that lives inside your browser (Chrome, Brave, or any Chromium-based browser). When you use the extension, your private keys are stored locally on your device, not on a server. This means you are the sole owner of your crypto assets, and no centralized entity can freeze or seize them.

Web3 Gateway Features

True Self-Custody

Your 12-word recovery phrase is generated locally and never leaves your device. Coinbase cannot access or recover your funds, giving you absolute ownership.

Universal dApp Access

Connect instantly to thousands of Web3 applications. The extension supports all EVM-compatible networks and even Solana, so you are not locked into a single ecosystem.

NFT Management

View, store, and trade your NFT collection directly within the wallet interface. The extension displays your digital collectibles seamlessly across supported chains.

DeFi & DEX Trading

Swap thousands of tokens on decentralized exchanges and harness DeFi yield opportunities without ever leaving your browser tab.

Setup Guide

01
Install from the official store

Navigate to the Chrome Web Store and search for "Coinbase Wallet extension." Verify the developer is Toshi Holdings Pte. Ltd. to avoid malicious copycats.

02
Create or Import your wallet

Choose "Create new wallet" if you are starting fresh. If you already have a MetaMask, Trust Wallet, or mobile Coinbase Wallet, select "Import an existing wallet" and enter your recovery phrase.

03
Secure your recovery phrase

The extension will display a 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase. Write this down on paper and store it offline. Never screenshot it, email it, or store it in cloud notes. Coinbase cannot recover this phrase for you if it is lost.

04
Set a strong password

Create a password that unlocks the extension on your device. This password is separate from your recovery phrase and protects against unauthorized local access.

05
Fund your wallet

You can transfer crypto from your Coinbase.com account, send assets from another wallet, or use the integrated on-ramp to purchase crypto directly.

Safety First

The Coinbase Wallet Extension is a hot wallet. While it is highly convenient for daily Web3 activity, it is not intended for storing life-changing sums of cryptocurrency. For long-term holdings, consider pairing the extension with a hardware wallet like Ledger for added protection. Never share your recovery phrase with anyone — Coinbase support will never ask for it.

Extension vs Exchange

Many newcomers confuse the two. Coinbase.com (and the Coinbase mobile app) is a centralized brokerage. When you buy crypto there, Coinbase holds the private keys on your behalf. You log in with an email and password, and you can recover your account through standard support channels.

The Coinbase Wallet Extension, by contrast, is a non-custodial tool. There is no “forgot password” button that can restore your funds. The 12-word phrase is the only backup. This distinction is what gives you true ownership, but it also places full responsibility on you.
